Community Development
Across the different markets we operate in, we understand that there are common and unique socioeconomic and community needs. That is why we are committed to leveraging on our presence across the markets we operate in, to make a difference in people’s lives and enable communities to thrive.
Through Axiata Foundation and the various initiatives launched by our OpCos, we strive to pave the way for a digitally-inclusive future where our communities thrive. Axiata Foundation’s efforts are focused in three pillars – Education, Community Investments and Environment. Within each of these areas, we are leveraging the power of digital technology to bridge existing divides facing underserved and marginalised communities – providing access to essential services, elevating quality of life, nurturing young generations with critical skills and much more.
Outlook
We recognise the potential of connectivity and are striving to leverage our resources to make a positive impact in the communities we serve. To pursue this, we will continue to forge meaningful partnerships worldwide with governments, businesses, non-profit organisations, independent firms and civil society. By collaborating with these entities, we hope to create sustainable development solutions or programmes that can be scaled and replicated across different communities.
Nurturing Future Leaders
Our structured leadership programmes were the very first piece of our social sustainability agenda and continue to be the bedrock of our impact. Through these programmes, we are nurturing young talents with the soft and hard skills to become future leaders of their country’s rapidly developing digital economies.
Axiata Young Talent Programme (AYTP)
Has benefitted 2,301 Malaysian youths through four age-specific programmes since 2011
XL Future Leaders (XLFL)
Has benefitted more than a million youths from across Indonesia and helped graduates enter 110 universities since 2013
SmartEdu University Student Development Programme (USDP)
Has equipped 48 university students with the competencies and skills to become corporate digital leaders
Addressing The Digital Gender Gap
Through the Axiata Digital Leaders Programme (ADLP), we provide girls and women from secondary school to undergraduate level with digital industry knowledge, hands-on learning and leadership exercises, addressing the gender gap in digital skills and careers. Our strong efforts bagged us the United Nations Women Empowerment Principles (UN WEP) award in the Community Engagement & Partnership category.
Supporting Equitable Education For The Underprivileged
Through the Axiata Equity-in-Education Fund (AEiEF), we provide high-potential students from underprivileged backgrounds with scholarships to pursue their secondary and tertiary education, while also availing underprivileged students at all levels of academic achievement with school supplies and cash assistance so they can continue their education in spite of economic pressures.
Delivering Localised Educational Assistance
Together with Cambodia Rural Students Trust, supported the education of 40,000 high school students in Siem Reap, Cambodia, under Project R
In collaboration with the Institute of Engineering (IoE), Pulchowk Campus, encourages technical education and recognises young talents for their academic excellence through scholarships and Excellence Awards
Supported Sokola Institute in providing informal education to people without access to educational opportunities, and Menembus Batas Foundation by providing entrepreneurship training to the disabled community
Uplifting Quality Of Life For Communities
Under the Community Investments pillar of Axiata Foundation, we provide underserved and marginalised communities with access to basic necessities, helping them to overcome this fundamental obstacle to development. Beyond this, with the aim of empowering their equitable development and digital inclusion, we also install infrastructure for solar power, provide access to clean water and connect them to digital skills training.
